“I think about what will change human sensibility in the future.”
Kyoto-based artist, Kohei Nawa believes in creating an experience rather than making sculptures; to realize his vision, Nawa’s ‘Foam’ exhibition consists of a breathtaking, large-scale installation of immersive cloud-like foam using a mixture of detergent, glycerin and water. At once dreamlike, ephemeral, and ever-changing, the exhibition is not so much about the collective whole, but its individual components. “Each bubble cannot escape the cycle of birth and destruction, which is not unlike the way our cells operate as they metabolise and circulate,” Nawa explains. With his keen interest in industrial mass-production and digital culture, Nawa produces work that is at times disturbingly unsettling, and seeks to challenge the perception and illusion of viewers by blurring the line between virtuality and reality.
