In an industry of prevailing luxury-good norms and commercial pillaging, newcomer Vetements has amassed an unexpected following for their outré creations and eccentricity — think tablecloth-turned-dress and mannish oversized tailoring. The audacious brainchild of brothers Demna and Guram Gvasalia is by no means an impetuous attempt: previously of Maison Martin Margiela, Demna mastered the rules of the trade before setting out to prove they can be broken. Despite being unorthodox, at the heart of Vetements are classic, timeless creations, with their proportions completely rethought. Their SS16 show took high-fashion to a tacky Chinese restaurant in Paris’ Chinatown, as a reminder that their work, while avant-garde, belongs to the street. Fleshing out conspicuous designs with stylistic insight into what people want to wear, Vetements appeals to real audiences — not just fleeting socialites.
