Where the world today is characterised by movement and flux, one artist stops to question what that does to our identity. Barcelona-based photographer Laia Gutiérrez conceptualised this series of photographs exploring the pervasive motifs of identity, migration and isolation. Titled ‘Zugunruhe’, her images of isolated landscapes hopes to evoke introspection, forcing us to explore our hidden intimate emotions. Flowing waters and birds in flight are frozen in frame; stationary majestic glaciers and mountains appear solitary and misplaced; portraits conceal either physical or geographical traits, creating an unsettling sense of displacement. Each image is foreign, inducing intense sentiments which, when addressed, causes one to constantly question and negotiate our sense of self. The experience may be daunting, but it is ultimately a personal trip of rediscovery.
