Ellis Island was once a primary clearing house for millions of immigrants, marking their gateway to a new life in United States. For more than six decades, the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital had been closed to the public; today, the abandoned structure has been brought back to life through an exhibition titled, “Unframed”, featuring century-old photographs that have been carefully put together by French artist JR. With the support of the Save Ellis Island organisation, JR hopes that the exhibition, at once haunting and hopeful, will allow new generations to explore the history of the island, and also inspire them to join in its historic preservation.
