What is art? Can it be translated and distilled down into mere numbers and a perfect combination of elements, as the Golden Ratio tries to explain? Artist Joanie Lemercier takes the notion of art as math and science one step further by creating 1,000 landscapes out of thousands of uniformly-sized black dots using complex video game functions and CG techniques — pointillism for the 21st century, perhaps. The result is alien-looking, otherworldly forms “where no reference of scale, position or time can be found” that are eerily haunting.
