Artist Kim Alsbrooks questions the idea of class distinction and status quo by painting historical figures on discarded, flattened drink cans. These portraits, originally painted on ivory from the 17th-18th Century, are recreated on aluminium cans. And Alsbrooks is picky about the cans she uses: “One cannot flatten the trash. It just doesn’t work. It must be found so that there are no wrinkles in the middle, and the graphic should be well-centered.” She then finds portraits that she thinks would complement the can, and gets to work.
